RELEASE NOTES

Ack! Is it that time of year already?? Where you have to elbow old ladies to get near the checkout at the local gift emporium??

Well, no not quite. As I write this it's still October, but the shops around here have had their Christmas stuff for sale for about 6 months now so Christmas must actually be getting a little closer.

Santa

I was watching the previous version of this screen saver, and altho I still love to watch it, I thought that maybe the graphics could do with a polish. It looked great when I first made it way back when, but not quite as good now. So before I started porting it to work on the Mac, I decided to update the graphics. I've remade Santa, the Elf, the Sleigh and all the houses have been replaced. I basically left the Reindeer alone because I thought they looked pretty cool already. So now I think the whole thing looks a lot niftier than before, but the general feel is the same, which I liked.

So for those of you unfamiliar with it, this screen saver was first released back in (I think from memory) the year 2000. Back then, the graphics were crap, altho at the time I liked it. Then I remade it a few years ago (2002?) from scratch and the whole thing was so much better. So this is the 3rd time I've done a major sort of update, an it's the first time it's been available under both Windows and Mac OS X so even more people can enjoy the Christmas spirit!

The elf still does all the work throwing the presents down the chimneys. He really needs to join a union. And there's no over 50 Christmas tunes as background music. In general, this is one of my favourite, so I hope you all get a kick out of it.

As always, if you spot any bugs let me know.

Merry Christmas and enjoy!

RELEASE NOTES (v1.7)

I decided it was time to give this screensaver a quick revision, but after watching it for a while I just couldn't see what I should change/add. I like it how it is. So I decided instead to fix some annoying bugs, and add as many Christmas tunes as I could find.

I got a few emails about it missing some peoples favourites. Now there's over 50 christmas tunes, so hopefully everyones favourite is in there.

I also fixed the bugs with the countdown being out by a day because of the leap year.

If you spot any more bugs, let me kow!

Enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas!

RELEASE NOTES (v1.5)

I started getting a few people reporting that everything in this screensaver was in shades of blue. It wasn't many people, but I since it was more than one I knew they weren't making it up and I wanted to know what could cause it.

I had no idea to start with. After I'd pulled out every hair on my body, escept for a mysterious one on my left elbow, I had an idea. Turns out not all systems support a GL extension I was using to switch BGR to RGB (the colour format). So I stopped using it and wrote a manual way of doing it and I'm almost certain the problem is now fixed!

Hopefully this thing is now bug free and this will be the last release for this year. If you do spot any bugs, you'll make me cry. But please let me know anyway.

Enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas!

RELEASE NOTES (v1.3)

Turns out there were some bugs in the previous version. This should fix them all.

Some people using ME and 98 were having problems with it crashing if they had music turned on. This is now fixed.

There was also a prob that meant you couldn't turn off the countdown at all. That's fixed too!

And cos I'm so nice I've put in a redundant music playing system. This means if you don't have a compatible version of DirectX installed the music will try and play thru Windows' own basic music playing functions. I was going to dump DirectX altogether, but I found on my 98 test machine that the basic Windows way didn't work properly after I had installed DirectX. So I figured I'd include both so that the chances of music working for more people without them having to do anything are greatly increased. Music should even work under NT now.

Enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas!

RELEASE NOTES (v1.2)

I'm still in a bit of shock over how popular this screen saver became when I released it for Christmas 2002. It's great when so many people enjoy something you've put so much effort into. So I've polished it up a bit for this year, fixed all the bugs I could find and tried to speed up the loading time a bit. I've also added clouds in the sky and heaps more background music selections. Now with over 25 Christmas songs there's no way your co-workers will stay sane.

You can register online and get the full version almost instantly by going to:

You can also register UC3D and get this, and all other UC3D v1 screen savers for the one low price. For more info on UC3D go to:

I've done my best to make sure this is bug free, but if you spot any bugs please let me know.

Enjoy!

RELEASE NOTES (v1.0)

In the futuristic year 2000 I made a screensaver imaginitively titled Christmas 2000. At the time I thought it was rather nifty. I would sit back looking at it and say, 'Gee, I think that's rather nifty' and I was quite proud.

Well a lot has happened since then and when I recently had a look at that old screensaver I didn't think it was all that nifty at all.

So I started again. I took the same basic idea but started from scratch and put into practice all the new stuff I've learned how to do in the last 2 years, and then I learnt new stuff aswell.

I've now worked round the clock, without so much as a minute and a halfs rest, for weeks to get it ready with plenty of time before Christmas.

The result is, if I do say so myself, niftier than the niftiest thing you can think of. It's more than 83.2 times better than the old one. Infact it's atleast 69.8 times better than anything I've ever seen before. You do the math! It all equals copious amount of niftiness.

And here it is for your enjoyment. If you like it, and want to keep basking in all its nifty glory, then help me out and register it. I've made it as cheap as possible. A mere US$9.95 for the full version. Compared to the prices on some of the other screensavers out there that don't even compare in levels of niftiness, that's a pretty damn good deal.

Merry Christmas and Enjoy!

On September 30th, Apple made its latest version of OS X—El Capitan—available for download from the Mac App Store. However, OS X 10.11 is less about whiz-bang new features and more of a maintenance release. Apple chose to fill in the gaps, so to speak, and make the necessary modifications to make this release rock-solid, resolving many of the known issues that affected Mac users. Meanwhile, developers also have a simple solution to fix the Mac app security and crashing issue when users have encountered after they upgrade to El Capitan. Here are details.

First, get the Best Video Converter for Mac OS X El Capitan:

To upgrade to El Capitan seems to be a no-brainer. For those who want to make full advantage of the new Apple operating system, it is suggested to add some necessary programs on Mac. Here, iFastime Video Converter Ultimate for Mac is an all-around video converter for OS X El Capitan, which integrates a Blu-ray Ripper, DVD Ripper, Video Converter and Video Editor into one.

With it, you can easily convert any videos (include the downloaded online videos and recorded videos), no matter Blu-ray, DVD, or 4K UHD 2160p, HD 1080p, 720p, SD videos into MP4, MOV, FLV, WMV, AVI and other commonly-used formats for playback on Mac OS X El Capitan, as well as directly to Apple, Samsung, HTC, Sony, Google and other mobile devices, with fast video conversion speed and original quality reserved.

Note: You should make ensure you've downloaded the latest upgraded version of iFastime Video Converter Ultimate for Mac.

Then, solve 'error message' when installing on Mac OS X El Capitan:

The security issue has swept everywhere for new Mac users. It's usually not necessary to change any security settings, and as a rule you shouldn't. To make a one-time exception to the security policy, temporarily disable Gatekeeper as follows:

1. Open System Preferences and the 'Security & Privacy' options

2. Click the padlock at the bottom if it is locked. Set 'Allow applications downloaded from:' to 'Anywhere'.

3. Keep that open, but go back to your finder window

4. Open ifastime mac app it should work this time.

Note: This is a temporarily change. So when the installation is done, revert the setting.

If it didn’t help, try to restart your computer and open the mac program again.

Last, if there are still issues, start fixing the crashing Problems on Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11:

Step 1. Download a *.mvp file from here.

Step 2. Open Applications folder on Mac OS X El Capitan, right click iFastmie Mac app and select 'Show Package Contents'.

Step 3. Open Contents > MacOS, and drag the downloaded 'SimpleHTMLTextImporter.mvp' file to MacOS folder and confirm replacement.

Note: If it didn't pop-up a window to ask if replace or not, pls delete the old file manually and then drag in the new file.

Step 4. Relaunch iFastime Video Converter Ultimate for Mac to see if it works well with Mac OS X 10.11.

Tip: Other known issues affecting OS X El Capitan and solutions:

There are still a few issues that have come up in El Capitan. While they're not as glaring, per se, they can still be quite annoying! So, let's take a look at some known issues and how to resolve them.

1. Upgrade installation error messages

Santa's Crashing Christmas Mac Os Catalina

Symptoms: After downloading the OS X El Capitan Installer from the Mac App Store and executing to launch it, the install encounters an error and prevents it from proceeding with the installation.

Causes: System files or processes currently in use by the OS are the likely culprits. Also, check the vendor's website for applications installed and verify they are 10.11 compliant. Some apps have yet to make the upgrade to supporting 10.11 and may be affected by new technologies in El Capitan, such as System Integrity Protection (SIP).

Solution: A simple reboot (or shutdown) may be required when it comes to hanging system files or processes. The action will clear out any task requiring the use of those files/services. Another possibility is to power down and then power up holding the [Shift] key. This will enable Safe Mode, which loads the OS without extensions. If the upgrade proceeds, then an unsupported app is probably the cause.

2. Spotlight performance trouble

Symptoms: Spotlight has gained even deeper integration with OS X and web services, which helps make searches that are nimble and informative—until their not. Spotlight is supposed to report back information from dozens of sources, but when it doesn't or it's limited in scope, that's a problem.

Causes: Spotlight maintains an index (database) of information that it catalogs. If the index becomes corrupt (possible, but not uncommon) or if the system is still indexing due to the upgrade (most common), then Spotlight will appear to be slow to respond.

Solution: The first thing to check is what exactly Spotlight is set to index by going to the Search Results tab under System Preferences Spotlight. Only checked boxes are used by Spotlight—all others are ignored.

Once the settings have been verified, check to ensure Spotlight isn't currently indexing by clicking on the Spotlight magnifying glass in the menu bar. During this time, it's best to let the computer complete the task.

If the issue still persists, the database may be corrupt and require a reindexing. To perform this, launch Terminal and enter the following commands, one at a time:

mdutil -Ea
mdutil -ai off
mdutil -ai on

The first command will effectively delete the current index, while the second the third commands turn off Spotlight and turn the service back on again. Immediately after the third command is executed, Spotlight will create a new database and begin indexing it. Please remember this process takes time (as in hours) to complete and that it's best to not interrupt it until it's done.

3. Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac crashes repeatedly

Symptoms: When opening Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or Outlook 2016, the app crashes and/or the system freezes.

Causes: According to Microsoft, there's a bug (or series of bugs) preventing Office 2016 from launching on Apple computers running El Capitan. Regardless of whether the computer was upgraded or clean installed, the results are the same for Office 2016 users and some Outlook 2011 for Mac users.

Solution: As of this writing, Microsoft has issued a statement regarding the issues experienced by users of Office 2016 for Mac. It's currently working on a solution to fix these problems.

Office 2011 for Mac seems to be working well, apart from Outlook 2011, so that may be a possibility for users who are able to downgrade. Additionally, users may be able to continue working temporarily by using Google Apps or Apache Open Office, as both are free and OS X-compliant.

4. 'Application' is not working properly

Symptoms: 'Application X' was working perfectly prior to the upgrade. Post-upgrade, it does not function properly or even load at all.

Causes: The causes for a particular application not loading or working correctly are nearly limitless and beyond the scope of this article. However, some of the more prevalent reasons for application failure in this case would be system file handling trouble, application compatibility, and/or OS limitation/feature changes.

Solution: The best way to go about resolving an issue with a specific application not working in El Capitan is to first visit the vendor's website to verify compatibility. Many vendors have taken the time between beta and public releases to test and properly vet their apps for compatability with the latest version of OS X. Updating applications to their latest versions will typically resolve any outstanding trouble.

5. Setup user account login prompt

Symptoms: After the final reboot of the upgrade process, the user is brought to the logon screen with an account listed as 'Setup user' and prompted for a password to authenticate. Regardless of the password entered, the password box shakes 'no,' and the user is not able to login.

Causes: This is a mysterious occurrence that has been happening very infrequently. While no clear explanation exists as to why it affects so few or the seemingly random nature of the occurrence, it does appear to be some sort of configuration pass that does not fully complete.

Solution: Reboot your Mac or, better yet, shut it down. Power on your Mac and, after going through the boot process (progress bar), it should load the login with your correct user account listed.

Thankfully, little has been reported regarding system-level issues affecting the usability of the latest OS. Much of it stems from incompatibility issues between outdated apps and the way in which OS X 10.11 handles systems calls and functions. However, if you're finding an excessive number of issues plaguing your El Capitan upgrade, it may be a good idea to backup your data and perform a clean install of El Capitan from scratch. This would definitely maximize your chances at achieving a stable environment by starting with a good, clean foundation for your apps.

Now get a trouble-free experience with new Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.
